Peace Frequency Podcast – Community Based Peacebuilding Series

This month I had the great privilege of helping co-facilitate and design the USIP online course, Community Based Peacebuilding: Engaging Youth. The main instructor for the course was Dr. Alison Milofsky, who is a brilliant, dynamic and gifted facilitator. Part of the course experience involved four great interviews on the Peace Frequency podcast. Alison and I co-hosted these episodes and were able to bring some great stories and perspectives into the course.

Peace Frequency w/ Guest, Mark Brimhall-Vargas. In this episode we explored the different definitions and types of dialogue and discussed some of the important complexities involving race, class, gender, sexual orientation and other dimension of identity.

Teaching Our Way Out of the Cave

This past October I gave the keynote presentation at the Teaching about Global Conflict and Peacebuilding Conference at Montgomery Community College and the video was uploaded to YouTube just a couple weeks ago.

The event brought together a great group of community college educators interested in establishing and developing peace and conflict studies programs at their respective colleges. The goal of my presentation was to introduce and outline some of the foundational concepts within the peace and conflict studies field and share some pedagogical approaches for becoming a peace educator, no matter the subject matter you teach or age group with whom you work.

Advanced Seminar in Kingian Nonviolence

This past week I participated in a week-long, intensive exploration of Kingian Nonviolence. The concepts, philosophies, and experiences that both informed and grew out of the Civil Rights Movement, helped advance an understanding of nonviolence – an understanding very much rooted in the vision and experimentation Dr. King brought to the struggle, hence the term “Kingian Nonviolence.”  After he was assassinated, those who had worked and organized alongside Dr. King set out to codify Kingian Nonviolence into a curriculum so that it could be carried on to the ensuing generations. This curriculum was developed by two prominent civil rights activists and leaders who worked alongside Dr. King in some of the movement’s most powerful nonviolent campaigns in Nashville, TN, Albany, GA, Chicago, IL and other communities across the US.  These two men are Dr. David Jehnsen and Dr. Bernard Lafayette.
